**焼尻島物語　その18

三寒四温**

寒い日と暖かい日が、かわるがわるやってきます。
春はもうすぐそこ。
野鳥たちの本格的な渡りの季節も、間もなく始まります。

ミヤマホオジロやジョウビタキに出会える日も、もう間近です。

写真は、以前わが家の窓の下に姿を見せたジョウビタキ。
その名の由来は、オスの特徴である頭の白い部分が、
能楽で使われる老翁（尉〈じょう〉）の面の白髪頭に似ていることから
「ジョウ」と呼ばれるようになったといわれています。

また鳴き声が、火打石を打つときの「チャッ、チャッ」という音に似ていることから、
「ヒタキ（火焚き）」の名もつけられました。

春を待つこの季節、
小さな訪問者との出会いが、いっそう楽しみになります。

The Cold and Warm Days of Early Spring**

Cold days and warm days come one after another.
Spring is just around the corner,
and the great migration of wild birds will soon begin.

It will not be long before we see birds such as the Yellow-throated Bunting and the Daurian Redstart.

The photo shows a Daurian Redstart that once appeared beneath the window of my home.
The bird’s name comes from the male’s white head,
which resembles the white hair of the “Jō” mask used in Noh theater.

Its sharp call, sounding like “chak-chak,”
is also said to resemble the sound of striking flint,
which gave rise to the name hitaki (“fire-striker”).

In this season, as we wait for spring,
encounters with these small visitors become something to look forward to.
